Comprehensive Car Insurance UK

A comprehensive insurance policy is for when you need "all round" cover for your vehicle. Unlike third party policies, comprehensive protects you from almost all unexpected eventualities. From vandalism to a fallen tree you'll be covered.

Unfortunately, like most things in this day and age there are a few exceptions that appear in the small print. Most of us tend to just skip over the barely legible text at the bottom of the page so here are a few of the main points.

Maintenance Charges

It is important to be aware that your insurance policy will not cover maintenance costs of any type. Any wear and tear, maintenance and servicing costs are still your responsibility. Even after an accident your insurance company can still instruct the garage to charge you for any repairs that would normally have to be replaced due to excessive wear. Items such as tyres commonly come under this category.

Policy Excess

Most insurers will not normally cover you for 100% of the costs incurred and you normally have to agree to pay for the first so much of a claim. This amount can vary from policy to policy. Choosing a higher excess amount (ie the amount you have to pay in the event of a claim) Would normally decrease your premium.

Personal Belongings

Motor Insurance companies will not normally insure you for large amounts of valuebles in your car. Quite often you'll find there's a limit of around £100 set. Its also worth remembering you cannot claim for valubles alone, It has to be part of another claim. If you do need to carry valuebles around in your car it would be a good idea to check with your Home contents insurance to see if that covers you.

Deception

The other major get out clause insurance companies have built in is to loss and damages caused by deception. This is to say that if you have been unlucky enough to fall prey to an unscruipuless thief or con-artist and are tricked into parting with your car then you'll be unable to claim on your insurance.

Likewise be carefull about the dealer you buy your car from, make sure it is always a legitimate company. Many "Rogue traders" exist and are out to get your money in any way they can, Be sure to get all the relevant documentation with the car such as the title deads, such documents ensure you are not buying into stolen goods and without them you have no basis for an insurance claim.

Comprehensive Suitability

This type of insurance policy is best suited to newer car owners where their car has significant capital value which has to be protected.
